My most recent poetry is........

Moments of Selfreflection
by Alvis G. Zujevs
March-April 2009

I believe in the......

Prime Mover!
I was raised Latvian Lutheran; a "fire and brimstone" version of the German monks' departure from Catholicism.
This version made Southern Baptists seem like pussies.
I attended Latvian school, Sunday School, Bible classes, Boy Scouts and sang in the church choir until I rebelled at age fifteen!
My father was Russian Orthodox and prayed at the altar of Smirnoff's.
I met a Catholic girl. Married in the Catholic church. Converted to Catholicism for the children and was bounced from the Lutheran church: not for disbelieving in God.......just the wrong version!
The politics of religion are what causes it to be too divicive. All religions believe in a puppet master who constantly interferes in your life. It's the degree of intolerance that separates the various religions.
If we are given free will and than chastized for using it, the irony is lost on many.
I believe that a Supreme Being or Prime Mover began everything!
We are just too ignorant to understand his/her purpose.
That Energy set up all the laws of nature and sent the various chemicals, energy bonds and reactions off spinning to become beings within the original designs.
Even String Theory does not contradict the Prime Mover.
Eleven dimensions or "branes" periodically collide to produce a New Bang.
Are all Bangs equal?
Is one carbon based and the other silicon based?
Does the death of any entity cease it's existence or do we just move up to the next level?
What is the next level? Heaven, Hell, Purgatory or Bliss!
Why must we be indoctrinated into guilt to live within an accepted religion? POLITICS!!!
If no real or imaginary punishment existed, how would we be controlled?
We are all part of a master "unplan"! We move from one state of being to the next. There is no end to who or what we may become.
Deepak Chopra may have the best human understanding of what it is that we are.
He believes that love is the universal glue that holds us together.
It has been proven that a miniscule portion of our brains' electromagnetic power is used to operate our daily lives. What happens to the rest of it. Newton proved that energy is neither created nor destroyed, it just changes form.
Is it that power called love that holds everyone and everything together?

As I listen to and view.....

The words and works of talented and seasoned artists, I begin to feel a part of something much greater than myself.
Huge egos exist to challenge or stifle us
Kind and generous souls promote kindness and generosity
Knowledge and talent are King
This Kingdom of performers from all over the world unites us outside of religion, politics and resources
We quickly accept new ideas but throw away the “en vogue” crap
I have trouble keeping up
I’m like a child in an intellectual “Toy’R’Us”
Before I can understand one beautiful idea, I’m drawn to something else
One sales theory sounds perfect until the next one is “more perfect”
We all have customers who are wealthy, intellectual, eclectic
What does the rest of the world buy?
“Dogs Playing Poker”
We have tremendous ego’s but need constant stroking
The b-uncut group is a microcosm of the world
The poor are disqualified just as they are from purchasing cars and drinking clean water
The New World versus the Old World is a hugely entertaining mix of art appreciation, money and snob appeal
I love being part of this: Warts and All!

I have found mentors......

Young enough to be my children, but caring enough
To help an old man out!
I used to think I was young enough to prosper in this business
Not SO!!!
A mentor my own age tells me I do not have the time to earn a living doing art
I may not be the best but I've seen far worse selling
Now, I admire and trust this man and have solicited advice!
Maybe the truth is painful?
Other younger mentors have not mentioned the age thing
Maybe they're being kind?
NAW!!!!!!
After George W., kindness is passe!
I enjoy art but doing it for free is like coitus interuptus!
Maybe being Canadian is the problem,
The Sun shuns us from October to April...very little vitamin D
We're not polite, we're pissed living in a gloomy climate
Our sparks of inspiration begin in mid April and fire periodically until October
If we're lucky, some of the work is inspired
Canadians are naturally bipolar
We become less manic as we age since self delusion becomes more difficult
Art in Canada is mainly supported by the government of the day
American art is supported by philanthropists: we have very few philanthropists
The one's we do have throw their money at medical causes hoping to extend their miserly lives
If someone else benefits along the way, the philanthropist gets a plaque and chicken dinner
We are too young a country to have developed an artistic culture
We embrace soapstone carvings and totem poles by our native Indian populations
We are represented by a group called the "group of seven" as our traditional white artists
Their stuff is crap
I hope to learn from entrepreneurial Americans and Western Europeans who have a wealth of art culture

I try to meditate.......

But I can’t! Ten years ago it was easy and comfortable.
I’ve seen too much failure, pain, suffering and death
I try to relax but my muscles keep firing,
I try to rediscover my safe place, it’s gone!
I focus on light but I see only darkness
I give up frustrated and sad
Twenty-five years of watching my children suffer and one die,
Watching my wife progress with Parkinson’s
Pulling the plug on my father
Watching my mother in constant pain
Being in constant pain from a serious injury
Being addicted to painkillers
Gasping for air because of congestive heart failure
Fighting off panic attacks with evil poisons
Seeing the innocent die and the evil flourish
Years of failure by meeting the wrong people
I want to be able to capture beauty in my soul
I used to see serenity and beauty, now only sadness
Now, however, I’m beginning to see a light through my artwork
A future, a reason and method of expression
I’m still embryonic and curious
Elated when I succeed
Tormented when I fail!
Seeing art by talented people gives me hope
You all give me hope!

As I watched my daughter die........

My heart withered, my lungs stopped working and the tears flowed uncontrollably!
She was not going to survive so her mother, two brothers, future sister-in-law, her grandmother, close hospital friends and I watched as she was taken off the respirator
She had to be taken out of her coma so it wouldn't be murder. If she breathed, it would have been a miracle.
She took six shallow breaths and died.
A week before she had to be put on a respirator because her lungs were turning into tissue. No idea why! She had two malignant diseases; either could have killed her. Her mother told her that we'd see her on the other side of this minor problem.
All week long we watched as she deteriorated. There were daily meetings to discuss strategies and potential outcomes. We fooled ourselves. She couldn't die. She had fought a lifelong illness that could have taken her life on other occasions but she was so strong and positive that each incident was beaten by her!
She was totally unselfish. Since she spent atleast a third of her life in the hospital, she began working with the Early Childhood people to help with the young ones. She was fearless and powerful. She put to shame every person who I have ever met in my life.
At age two, she was stuck in hospital with an overwhelming infection. Her mother stayed with her as usual and my sons and I went home to ready the presents that Santa had left at home for her.
Unknown to us, Santa had found her the next morning and her room and bed were covered with all sorts of toys and clothes. She yelled out, "He found me, he found me!" Amazing how those elves work their miracles.
I listen to crap and find the authors of so far beneath her that I can't take them seriously.
There is no karma.
I am comforted by the knowledge that her "soul" is part of everything and one day we will meet at a much higher level of understanding and contentment.
