The Artist's Life: Surviving on the Fringe iin New York

I turned fifty this year, but most people guess I'm more like thirty-five. I point this out not to brag about my boyish charms, but because my youthful appearance and outlook generally attracts a relatively young circle of friends. My girlfriend is 32, for instance. So I had a little exhibition. It was great to see everyone. Lots of people, lots of good friends, some folks I had not seen in a while. I even scored truly awesome and amazingly cheap studio space, via networking, from the experience. And I sold some work. It didn't really cost me much to set it all up, either, in the end. Living in New York is hard work. I have two jobs, and I still can't make my rent. And that's in Brooklyn. I've had a few commissions this year, but still I can't catch up. Freelance work has gone the way of the dodo, more or less. I was walking my dogs this morning in the park near my apartment, and this middle-aged guy threw a bottle into the bushes. There was a trash can not two meters away from him, and the park was full of high school kids doing their summer volunteer work, picking up all the litter.
