Humming can be like chanting, an almost unconscious form of meditation. With lips pressed together, sound vibrating on the tender skin, the head becomes filled with resonance, and there is a sense of echoing amid the canyons of cavities within the skull. Images and colors come, floating on the notes. I remember reading the autobiography of Nina Simone and how she wrote that, after a performance, sometimes she would be awake for hours, lying in her bed, the songs still reverberating in her brain.…
