Sonic and visual artist
Thomas Bell was born in upstate New York in 1972 and currently lives and works in Brooklyn. From the age of seven, Thomas has been guided through the world of sound while studying guitar, trumpet, piano, upright and electric bass, sitar, steel pans, & percussion. He studied jazz and improvisation at Berklee College of Music and ethnomusicology at Florida State University.
Thomas is a self trained visual artist and works mostly in the abstract with an emphasis on the process of the work itself. Working mostly in the acrylic medium, Thomas' paintings have grown to include collage elements (paper, metal, wood, cloth, found objects) and print and image transfers. Many works are texture based and built-up and de-constructed over time. The process of the creation is what brings about the piece as most works are improvisations. Thomas has also been expanding his repertoire to include found object sculptures and thematic work as well.
