I was raised on classical music and American folk music. My mother teaches art, music and literature at the college level and higher. Both she and my father imbued me with a strong political sense as well, so we listened to Paul Robeson and Pete Seeger amongst the artists we admired.
My own personal preferences growing up included rock and pop. Favorites included the Beatles, of course, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, etc. Of course, I also loved the Jackson 5, Temptations, Supremes, James Brown and Earth Wind & Fire, etc.
In the 1980s, I started composing my own songs. I had a slight identity crisis. On one hand, I had the usual songwriter's desire to document a broken heart and relationship stories. On the other, I had a strong desire to speak out against injustice.
So I have written both.

My other posted piece will become the theme music for a television show I am attempting to launch, "Inside The Congressional Black Caucus."
At present, as you noticed, I am going through an influence phase that is markedly Afro-Caribbean. It is not easy for me, but I have a number of songs I want to produce in this style. I want my two boys to appreciate my thoughts -- and dance to them as well.
