Yocum is brilliant . He articulates the unexplainable through electric lines and vague images, without clarifying the details. With bold colors and poignant images, he would rather give the viewer elements with which to create their own thoughts and feelings rather than have them extrapolate his personal message or agenda. "As though he were tearing pages from a diary written in a foreign language, he keeps his secrets while unabashedly exposing the words in the form of conflicting images and sharp edges." Studying his work is like looking out over a city from a rooftop, trying to take in each and every vignette and combine them into one story. He lays out memories, emotions and pieces of everyday life with unruly brush strokes - more like acollection of free associations than an intentionally polished message. His painting mimics his attitude;raw, real and unrefined.
