16 individual pigment print photographs, 38" x 30" installed

Each image in this series, entitled "Portrait", is both literally and conceptually skin deep. On one hand the series supports traditional portraiture by presenting an unique and intimate photographic capture of a single individual. On the other hand the lack of representation, personality, or narrative expunge all of the traditional reference points of a portrait. What's left is pure physicality. Sensuality and individuality are recognizable but largely unfamiliar and without reference. The series asks the viewer to come to terms with how we acknowledge identity when facial details, social clues, and even gender markers are inaccessible.

It's a concept that's foreign to most people, and maybe a little off-putting. Intimacy with the whole of humankind, without a specific person or gender personifying that intimacy. It has the potential to be ego-defying...and therefore spiritually uplifting.

Comment by Hannes Rothe on August 4, 2009 at 4:47am: odd about your work is, that it reveals my disguised sexual thoughts..the intense of skin just let's me search for any sexual clue...any clue to a gender...especially because we're so well trained in looking for these every time we see a little skin on the street...
