Open Call for Artist Members...

"Remember when New York City was a place where the hopeful, the talented, and the lost came to get found, live cheaply, and become great (not just rich) artists? Well, it hasn’t seemed like that kind of place for a while, but a new young art scene is emerging in all the boroughs that is more excited about the city streets than the white walls of Chelsea." - *The New New York Art Scene* By Alex Gartenfeld for Interview Magazine

Realizing the art community’s need for a creative outlet, zoom gallery first opened its doors in Boone, North Carolina in 1994 (then called the Nth Degree Gallery), and a second location in Raleigh, NC in 2000. The original location in Boone - with a main gallery, a lobby gallery, and six artist work studios - was the first commercial fine art gallery in downtown Boone, and is still open today and flourishing as a Co-op artist run gallery. zoom gallery in Raleigh, NC was the first of a trend of artist run independent galleries to re-establish Moore Square as an Arts District. This iteration of zoom had a successful run of four years, and closed when the building that housed the gallery was vacated for redevelopment as a condominium community. The first opening at zoom Raleigh was touted by the Independent Weekly as a “Best Bet”, and similar accolades continued throughout its time serving the community.

Fast forward to 2010... thezoomroom - NYC - coming soon to an East Village, NYC, USA near you!

The new zoom room NYC is to be a contemporary fine art pocket-gallery/collective, and we're currently seeking member artists and designers - painters and makers - to join our team.

Member artists will be eligible for a Duo or Solo show every year, and the gallery will keep an inventory of artwork from member artists available for sale at all times. Artists will be eligible for occasional exhibit opps in our sister venues; we'll have critique gatherings and other artist workshops; and our primary goal is to get our artists more exposure, so they can sell sell sell... We're artists and designers ourselves, and we know that no one really wants to be a *starving artist* !

Member artists will get marketing support through development and distribution of press releases, e-newsletters, guerrilla marketing, postcards, blogosphere promotion, opening receptions, and more.

Membership fees will be: $125/month (we hate to even have fees, but emerging art galleries don't make much $$ off commissions, and we have rent to pay rent to pay rent to pay in order to be here pimping your work)...
The gallery will only take 35% commission on member artist sales...
And there will be one Visiting Artist Studio for rent in the rear of the gallery (approx. 150 SF with a window, for $425/month).

We're looking for motivated emerging artist types with fresh work that's itching to get out of your studio (or apartment) and into the world... figurative... abstract... low brow...high-brow... show us what ya' got.

Please send us for work samples and your artist resume to zoomroomnyc@gmail.com, and we'll get back to you with more information.

Looking forward to seeing your work!

Cheers,

Marina

MODERN PAINTERS
RE:VISION Design Awards 2010
http://www.artinfo.com/modernpainters/

DEADLINE: 11/17/09

ATTENTION ALL DESIGNERS

ANNOUNCING THE RE:VISION DESIGN AWARD
CALL FOR ENTRIES

Modern Painters magazine and Louise Blouin Media are inviting designers from around the world to participate in the inaugural Re:VISION Design Award. The first prize is ten thousand dollars (US).

Designers, we are living in a time of profound economic and environmental upheaval. Our question to you is this: How do we make a home responsibly in such a world? What constitutes a beautiful, inspiring, and environmentally sustainable domestic realm?

The Re:VISION Design Award challenges emerging designers to revisit, rethink and reimagine how we live in our homes in these environmentally and economically challenging times. Whether in the fields of furniture, lighting, product, interior or environmental design (or some combination of these), we seek to recognize innovative designs that thoughtfully explore new ways to live, work, play and interact in the domestic environment. How can design make the way we live in our homes more enjoyable and beautiful? How can it make it more efficient? And most important, sustainable? Show us an object or environment that you have conceived that offers a new, more enlightened domestic lifestyle.

An international jury of design luminaries, including the evolutionary designer Ross Lovegrove, Renny Ramakers, design historian and co-founder of Droog, Rob Forbes design thinker and founder of Design Within Reach, David McFadden, chief curator of New York's Museum of Arts and Design, Rosanne Somerson, professor of furniture design, RISD, and Cristina Grajales, dealer in vintage modern and contemporary furniture, will evaluate entries based on innovation, performance, sustainability and visual appeal, among other criteria.

The first-prize winner will receive $10,000, and the two runners-up will be awarded $2,500 each. All three will be profiled in the May 2010 issue of Modern Painters and on ARTINFO.com. The work of 10 semifinalists will also be featured on ARTINFO.com. The deadline is November 17, 2009.

To participate—and for details concerning the rules, judging criteria, jury and application instructions—please visit our comprehensive awards website at
http://promotions.artinfo.com/mp-re-vision/

We look forward to seeing your submissions!

Global Village - open call for artists

a project
The aim of Global Village is an exhibition with innovating art from Holland and abroad, that contributes to the public for a better understanding off the effects and opportunities of globalisation. To attract a large public we have selected the Grand Church of Alkmaar for the location. A beautiful 16th century Gothic church, that lays in the heart of centre of Alkmaar. It has more then 3.000 m2 exhibition space.

Prior to the exhibition 3 previews will be held in Alkmaar and in its neighbouring towns Heerhugowaard and Langedijk. The night before the opening of the exhibition there will be a party.

an exhibition
For the exhibition we are looking for 60 artists with innovating work (like installation, video and digital art). Those artists have to show art about the theme of globalisation (like internet, media, mass consumption and climate change).

The exhibition will take place from Saturday 23 January 2010 till Sunday 31 January 2010 in the Grand Saint Laurens church of Alkmaar.

a preview
Prior to the exhibition 3 previews will be held in Heerhugowaard, Alkmaar and Langedijk. In each town 5 artists will show an artwork. For the locations of these previews we are planning for the town halls or public libraries of these towns. At this moment we are negotiating with the possible locations.

The previews will be held from 2 January 2010 till 17 January 2010.

a party
The night before the opening of the exhibition in the Grand Church of Alkmaar a party will be held. We are going to invite music bands that fit the Global Village project. On the location some artists will show their artworks (like light objects and video).

The party will be held on Friday 22 January 2010.

a catalogue
We will also make a catalogue about this project. The form of the catalogue will be like a network site, including profile photos off the artists and off course descriptions and photos off the artworks. We will publish 500 catalogues.

Artist can apply for Global Village before 1 September 2009. More information on: http://www.stichtingwhitecube.nl

THE SQUARE FOOT SHOW with the theme ELECTION 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 25th | 3pm - 8pm
Works on view until Sunday, November 9th

Politics and art? As impossible a mix as oil and water? Not necessarily. Has there ever been a more powerful anti-war message than Picasso’s Guernica? The last year has shown that Americans want to engage in politics again. We do care what happens here and abroad. To celebrate the excitement now bubbling as the coming election approaches, Art Gotham chose the timely theme “Election 2008” for its biannual Square Foot Show, which opens Saturday, October 26th and runs through Sunday, November 9th. Artists were provided with 12x12 inch canvases, and asked to think politically as they create works for the show. Nothing like a tough assignment for producing amazing results.

Registration days for The Square Foot Show are Saturday, September 20th & Sunday, September 21st from 1pm – 5pm at Art Gotham. To receive more participation and registration information, please email artgotham@gmail.com.
Artwork Drop-Off Date: Thursday, October 24th 2pm – 8pm
