What is social bookmarking and how can I use it for my private homepage or public network

Social bookmarking is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata.

In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.

Most social bookmark services encourage users to organize their bookmarks with informal tags instead of the traditional browser-based system of folders, although some services feature categories/folders or a combination of folders and tags. They also enable viewing bookmarks associated with a chosen tag, and include information about the number of users who have bookmarked them. Some social bookmarking services also draw inferences from the relationship of tags to create clusters of tags or bookmarks.

Many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for their lists of bookmarks, including lists organized by tags. This allows subscribers to become aware of new bookmarks as they are saved, shared, and tagged by other users.

As these services have matured and grown more popular, they have added extra features such as ratings and comments on bookmarks, the ability to import and export bookmarks from browsers, emailing of bookmarks, web annotation, and groups or other social network features.

Need bookmarking or keeping track of your favorites or of best webpages. Do this.

Open a folder on your desktop. Save it as html or even as .doc.

As you go to each webpage that you like just copy , cut and paste the URL into that new folder or document.

That page sits on your desktop. You want a webpage, just open the folder (and leave it open while you are online,
and click the web URL that you like. You will be transported right to your favorite page, and no one else has a record of your bookmarks.

You can store these bookmarks also, on a flash drive or on a cd rom or any other kind of disk, and insert that disk into almost any other computer and travel with your bookmarks.

Make an extra copy and then you have an extra copy.

Hi Lobsterpress - if I understand correctly what you are describe you describe a kind of private bookmarking. Social bookmarking is more. A colleague of mine get more hits on his youtube account just only because he and his friends sets social bookmarks to his videos ... do see see the different kind of bookmarking?

Hello Jens
Hello Lobsterpress

first of all I would like to present you website for art social bookmarking www.artnewscentral.com
which is not only social bookmarking website for the arts but also great news resource.

@Lobsterpress, you are right, your method is acceptable. But imagine that Tony Cospito who founded Brooklyn Art Project would never did it because he would rather meet artists at his studio and not share contacts and ideas...? Now imagine how many grat things can happen if you one day go under www.artnewscentral.com and you find tons of informations or bookmarks from someone who already found what you have been looking for. All beautifully and intelligent organised by tags.

Besides there is another aspect. Website SEO. It's the most popular way to increase "link popularity" and SEO method used by most of webmasters today.

2# Art Social Bookmarks articles. English isn't my first language - it is German and so I need time to translate this new stuff. So: your tipp to present my website for overtone music with social bookmarking on www.artnewscentral.com ... by the way - the most user of my portal for overtone music are from Germany - but it is in English ... which TAGS shall I use? The content is international ... English ... I found out that it was very good rated by google. Then it lost points in the ranking because some members worked with the German Bookmarking Provider Mr. Wong. I am a little frustated because it was one member of my portal / network who had done it. He bookmarked his YouTube Videos - his individual website ... okay - we are living in a free world but I thought what's going on with this member. Why he did not bookmark his video and page on the common space?
